Wangi
Wangi Island is one of the biggest islands in
Wakatobi, other than Kadelupa, Tomia and Binongko. Wangi Wangi is the most
popular island of all. It is the main gateway to Wakatobi Islands. Most travel
to all islands in the region of Wakatobi is via Wangi Wangi, Hence, it’s like a
transit island towards all of the places in Wakatobi. Wangi Wangi is also
popular as Wanci Island.

Location
Wangi
Wangi Island lies in the northwest cluster of
Wakatobi Islands, Wakatobi Regency, South East Sulawesi, Indonesia. Wangi Wangi
now has its own airport, i.e. Matahora Airport. The airport is beneficial, both
for the local people and visitors. The transportation to and from Wangi Wangi
has become much easier. To reach the island, you can fly from Makassar or
Kendari by Express Air, Batavia Air or Merpati. Luckily, there are more and
more flights to Makassar recently. Also, there are various flight destinations
to Makassar from almost all cities in Indonesia, including Balikpapan, Bali, Jakarta, Surabaya, Manado and
many
more. From Makassar, you can then travel to Wangi Wangi,
either by small-sized plane or by boat.
Activities
The
main activity visitors can do in this island is scuba diving. Scuba diving is
surely the most interesting activity due to its beautiful scenery of
underwater. Wangi Wangi has various living species, ranging from Picasso
Trigger Fish to the lurking Hammerhead Shark. In addition, Wangi Wangi also has many other species, including schools
of manta rays, sea cucumbers,
lobsters, starfish and anemones. The
variety of species allows divers to have the most incredible experience. Apart
from diving, tourists can visit a traditional market in Wangi Wangi. In the
market, you can shop traditional clothes, typical food, various capture fish
and souvenirs. Then, you can visit
Liyatogo Fortress. This is one of the biggest fortresses in the world. Enjoy
the uniqueness of the fortress and take some pictures.
Accommodations
There
are various resorts you can select to stay. Among the resorts you can select is
Patuno Resort. The resort is the closest and the most accessible. It is only
about 10 minutes driving from Matahora Airport. It has complete facilities,
such as restaurant, library, beach side cabanas, bar,
ballroom and meeting rooms. The rooms
offered are varied, i.e. standard room, deluxe room
or executive bungalow. The rates for the
rooms range from about Rp675,000 to Rp2,100,00 ($70 to $215) per night. Another resort you can select is Wakatobi
Dive Resort, but it is not in Wangi Wangi. The resort is in Tomea Island, near Wangi
Wangi.
